What is Hydraulic action?
A
Air may be trapped in joints and cracks. When a wave breaks, the trapped air is compressed which weaken the cliff and causes erosion.

A
When bits of rock and sand in waves grid down cliff surfaces like sand paper.

A
When waves smash rocks and pebbles on the shore into each other making them smaller, rounder and smoother.

Acids contained in the sea water will dissolve some types of rocks such as chalk and limestone.
