Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
Characteristics of tropical rainforests
.Most rainforests are located near equator
.They cover 7 percent of the Earth’s surface but contain 50 percent of the species.
. Poor soils as nutrients are leached out.
. High humidity which is ideal for plant growth
. Heavy rainfall
Define biodiversity
The variety of living organisms in the world or an area.
Name the four layers of a rainforest from top to bottom
Emergent, Canopy, Understory and Forest floor
Forest floor
4th Layer - Little sunlight. Contains moss, fallen leaves and branches
Undestory
3rd Layer
Canopy
2nd Layer
Emergent layer
1st layer - Tallest trees, has monkeys and bats
Examples of plant adaptations
. Thick veined leaves allow more water uptake
. Tall straight trees means they are taller and more sunlight
. Leaves with holes means that water can come down to roots
. Buttress roots are long roots above the soil and are very long. It allows the trees to get more nutrients.
Examples of animal adaptations
. Dart frogs have toxins that can paralyze and kill other
. Leaf cutter ants have spikes for protection
. Toucans have large beaks allowing to reach fruit on light branches.
