What is the cause of white muscle disease?
A
Deficiency of selenium and/or selenium

What age of animals are typically predisposed to WMD?
A
Typically younger growing animals (foals, kids and lambs)

Contrast the two different forms of WMD:
A
- Cardiac form → acute and sudden death
- Skeletal muscle form is generally much more responsive to treatment

What is the function of Selenium?
A
Co-factor for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase

What is the function of Vitamin E?
A
Incorporates into cell membranes - lipid soluble antioxidant

What are the clinicopathologic findings seen in WMD in the acute phase?
A
- Elevations in CK and AST
- Hyperkalaemia, hyponatremia and hypochloraemia
- Decreased glutathione peroxidase activity (Selenium)
