Central Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
For listeriosis in cattle:
- Name the cause of the condition that is most commonly implicated
- What food is it typically found in?
- How is it diagnosed?/What are the clinical signs?
- What is the prognosis for the condition?
- What are the best treatment options?
A
- Listeria monocytogenes
- Seen in poorly fermented silage
- Mononuclear pleocytosis (bacteria are very hard to grow) - cranial nerve defects (asymmetrical)
- Good prognosis if treated early
- Amoxicillin, procaine, oxytetracycline + correct acid base derangement’s
2
Q
For cerebrocortical necrosis (Polioencephalomalacia):
- How is a diagnosis typically made?
- What is the pathophysiology typically involved in the condition?
- The CSF signs resemble what other disease?
A
- Histologic diagnosis
- Altered thiamine metabolism - required for the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) - main method of producing glucose in the brain
- CSF signs - identical to those with listeriosis
3
Q
What are four potential cause of cerebrocortical necrosis?
A
Any of the following:
- Lead poisoning
- Lactic acidosis (Grain overload)
- Salt intoxication/water deprivation
- Bracken fern toxicity
- Sulfur intoxication
- Amprolium intoxication
