BVDV Flashcards
1
Q
What type of virus is BVDV?
A
Pestivirus (family flaviviridae) - RNA virus
2
Q
Describe the virus classification for BVDV:
A
- Either type 1 or type 2 based on genotype
- Both types exist as either a cytopathic or a non-cytopathic biotype
- Biotype doesn’t indicate virulence (only indicate how it acts in the tissue)
3
Q
For acute BVDV:
- Describe the signalment of cattle affected
- What are the clinical signs?
A
- 6 - 24 months of age
- Fever, leukopenia, damages epithelial surfaces, can cause immunosuppression and ammonia
4
Q
How does BVDV cause haemorrhage syndrome?
A
- Typically induces a thrombocytopaenia
5
Q
What is the most likely outcome of a heifer infected with BVDV between 100-150 days of gestation?
A
- hydrocephalus
- cerebellar hypoplasia
- hypomyelinogenesis
- ocular defects
- hypertrichosis
- brachygnathia
6
Q
What happens with a heifer that is infected between 40-125 days of gestation?
A
- Foetus is immunotolerant and survives → become PI animals (main way it is maintained in the herd)
7
Q
How does mucosal disease or chronic BVDV occur?
A
- Pi animal is superinfected with CP biotype or the NCP turns to CP - mucosal disease is usually per acute and fatal
8
Q
How is diagnosis of BVDV typically done?
A
Based on antigen testing:
- Fluorescent Ab
- PCR/serology
- Ag capture ELIZA
- ELIZA/serology
- IHC (ear notch)
9
Q
What are the two principles of managing BVDV?
A
- Detection and elimination of PI’s
- Vaccination
