What is life? - Compendium 1 Flashcards
Define the terms anatomy and physiology
Anatomy is the study of the structure of living things
Physiology is the study of the function of living things
Have an understanding of the different levels of anatomy and physiology
List 4 of each
Anatomy - Cytology, Embryology, Gross anatomy, Surface anatomy
Physiology - Cell, Systemic, Neurophysiological, Cardiovascular
What are the six levels of organisation in body
Chemical Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism
List the six characteristics of organisms
Organisation Metabolism Responsiveness Growth Development Reproduction Organisation Metabolism Responsiveness
Define homeostasis
The ability of the human body to maintain a constant internal environmental state.
List the characteristics of the anatomical position
Standing upright, face forward, arms by your side, palms forward, feet forward
Describe the properties of serous membranes
Serous membranes line the inside of the trunk cavities and cover the organs inside the cavities. Purpose is to reduce friction as organs move around inside the body.
What is the purpose of the anatomical position?
To have a point of reference when talking about the human body
What are some examples of the six levels of organisation in the human body?
Chemical- DNA RNA Hormones Cellular- Smooth muscle cell Tissue- Muscle tissue Organ- Liver, Kidney, Skin Organ System- Respiratory, Urinary, Nervous Organism- Human, Bird, Plant
What are the three planes in which the body can be divided?
Sagital
Transverse
Frontal
What are the three anterior cavities of the trunk?
Abdominal
Pelvic
Thoracic
Why do we divide the abdomen into quadrants or regions?
If someone is injured in an area, it is faster to refer to a region or quadrant to understand the potential organs and internal structures involved.
What are the quadrants and regions?
Upper Left, Upper Right, Lower Left, Lower Right
Right Hypochondriac region, Epigastric Region, Left Hypochondriac Region
Right Lumbar Region, Umbilical, Left Lumbar Region
Right Illiac, Hypogastric, Left Illiac
