How do we fuel our body? - Compendium 5 Flashcards
List the ways that ions and molecules can pass through the cell membrane
Passive transport
- Diffusion through lipid bilayer
- diffusion through ion channels
- osmosis
- facilitated diffusion using a carrier
Active transport
- primary
- secondary
Vesicular transport
- Endocytosis
- Exocytosis
Explain the process of osmosis and concentration gradients in controlling movement across the cell membrane
Water diffusing across a selectively permeable membrane. When solute is dissolved into water the higher concentrated area of solute will attract the water and allow it to diffuse through a membrane
What is hypotonic
Low solute concentrate, Water enters cell
What is isotonic
Concentration equal to that inside the cell. Water enters and leaves the cell freely
Hypertonic
High solute concentration. Water leaves the cell and dehydrates it.
What is the difference between facilitated diffusion and normal diffusion?
