What happens if it goes wrong? Flashcards
What happens if it goes wrong
this could affect cell reproduction and lead to cell death
what is apoptosis
Programmed cell death should occur at the same rate as cell reproduction
If cell death increases blood cell reproduction has to increase, this is where the G0 cells come in, they are called out of the resting phase
What is atrophy
Decrease in size of cells, a result of degeneration
Unlikely to develop into cancer
What is hypertrophy
The enlargement of an organ or tissue from the increase of size of its cells
unlikely to develop into cancer
What is hyperplasia
The enlargement of an organ or tissue caused by an increase in the reproduction rate of cells
An initial stage in the development of cancer
What is metaplasia
abnormal change in the nature of a tissue, adaptation from one cell type to another
Example: columnar epithelium and stratified squamous in the bronchus of smokers
What is dysplasia
The presence of cells of an abnormal type within a tissue
May signify a stage preceding the development of cancer
