Skin Flashcards
What is the skin and its functions
Largest organ in the body
Responsible for: protection, regulation, sensation
What are the three major parts of the skin
epidermis, dermis, subcutis
Explain the epidermis
made of stratified keratinised squamous epithelium
No blood vessels or nerve endings
deeper layers have interstitial fluid from the dermis which provides oxygen and nutrients and this drains away as lymph
several layers (strata) of cells
Extend from the deep basil air to the most superficial stratum corneum
Explain the dermis
tough and elastic
Formed from connective tissue
Matrix contains collagen fibres interlaced with elastic fibres
Collagen fibres find water and give skin it’s tensile strength
Fibroblasts macrophages and mast cells are the main cells
Explain structures where the dermis is found
small blood and lymph vessels
Sensory nerve endings
Sweat glands and ducts
Hares, arrector pili muscles and subaqueous glands
Explain the subcutis
deeper layer of the dermis
Mainly fat and connective tissue
