Early editions were criticized for presenting averages, masking the wide variations across the population

Until recently did not include people under the age of 16

It is a household survey, thus excludes homeless, hostels, prisons, and businesses

Cannot include murder or ‘victimless’ crimes

Excludes Corporate, Environmental, Health, Safety and Environment and Cyber Crime

Underestimates impact of criminal victimization

Ineffective at uncovering ‘hidden crimes’ such as domestic violence
