What does the endocrine system do?
Maintains homeostasis
What does the endocrine system involve?
- Metabolism
- Growth
- Development
- Reproduction
- Tissue function
- Sexual function
- Sleep
- Mood
What is the endocrine system comprised of?
A collection of glands that produce hormones
What do testicles do?
Produce testosterone
What does the hypothalamus do?
Has close communication with the pituitary gland, and acts as a connector between the nervous and endocrine systems
What do the pituitary glands do?
Consists of 2 sections, regulated by the hypothalamus and affects the secretion of many hormones
What do the thyroid glands do?
Uses iodine from food to make 2 main hormones:
- Triiodothyronine (T3)
- Thyroxin (T4)
What does the parathyroid gland do?
Regulates calcium in the body, makes parathyroid hormone (PTH)
What do the adrenal glands do?
Consists of 2 parts:
- Cortex (makes 50 steroid hormones)
- Medulla (makes adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine)
What does the pancreas do?
Secretes the hormones, insulin and glucagon, to control blood sugar levels
What do the ovaries do?
Produces oestrogen and progesterone, and some lesser hormones; relaxing and inhibiting
