Endocrine Medications Flashcards
How many endocrine medications can be given?
6
What does the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) do?
Stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroid hormones; Iodine
What does the Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) do?
Stimulates the Adrenal Cortex to secrete corticosteroids
What does the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) do?
Stimulates the secretion of oestrogen and the development of ova in the female and sperm in the male
What does the Luteinising Hormone (LH) do?
Stimulates ovulation in the female and the secretion of sex hormones in both male and female
What does the Growth Hormone (GH) do?
Affects growth and development of skeletal muscles
What does Prolactin do?
Stimulates the breast development necessary for lactation after childbirth
What does Hyperthyroidism Treatment aim to do?
Block the adverse effects of the thyroid hormones and stop their over secretion and block the effects of excessive thyroxine
List the 3 primary treatment options for hyperthyroidism
- Drug therapy
- Radioactive Iodine Therapy
- Total/Subtotal Thyroidectomy
What does insulin do?
Facilitates the transport of glucose across the cell membranes and into the cell
List 3 things diabetes can cause
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Peripheral vascular disease
How can Type II Diabetes be managed?
- Controlled diet
- Regular exercise
- Oral hypoglycaemics (as prescribed)
- Patient education and adherence is vital
What are the 2 types of oral hypoglycaemics?
- Sulfonylureas
2. Biguanides
List 3 examples of sulfonylureas
- Glienclamide
- Gliclazide
- Glimepiride
What do sulfonylureas do?
Stimulate insulin release from functioning pancreatic cells, improve sensitivity of beta cells to glucose thus leading to insulin secretion
