What is technology based training?
Technology based training involves the use of technology to deliver courses (e.g., web-based training, computerized self-study)
Traditional training does not involve the use of technology to deliver courses (e.g. Seminars, lectures)
Training definition
Training is formal and planned efforts that allow employees to acquire KSAs to improve performance in their current job (short-term focus)
Training is what you give; instructor approach (knowledge pushed)
Learning definition
Is the process and assimilation of what we hear, see or experience that alters or improves our KSAs
Learning is what you get. Learning is mostly self directed.Participant approach (pull).
What is Computer Based Training? (CBT)
Computer based training is training that is delivered via the computer for the purpose of teaching job- relevant knowledge and skills
What is E-learning?
E-learning is the use of computer network technology such as internet or intranet to deliver information or instructions to individuals
What is Self Directed Learning? (SDL)
Self directed learning is a process in which individuals or groups take the initiative and responsibility for learning and manage their own learning experience

Training is the event but learning is the process. Learning happens over time.
Benefits of SDL
- trainees learn at their own pace and determine their desired level of expertise
- trainees build on knowledge bases and training time may be reduced; trainees learn what is relevant to their needs
- trainees become independent and acquires skills enabling them to be more efficient and effective, reducing dependence on formal learning
- people learn according to their own style of learning
Limitations of SDL
- trainees learn the wrong things or may not learn all there is to know
- trainees may waste time accessing resources and finding helpful material
- SDL takes time
What is Asynchronous Training?
Asynchronous training is pre-recorded and available to employees at any time and from any location
What is Synchronous Training?
Synchronous training is live and requires trainees to be at their computer at a specific time
E.g. Adobe class
What is Gamification?
Gamification is the use of game mechanics and elements from video games to engage and motivate employees in the workplace
E.g. Getting badges after learning session
Mobile learning is
(M-learning) is the use of a mobile or portable technologies across locations for obtaining information and trainings. E.g. Flipgrid
