Week 5: Off-The-Job Training Flashcards
What are the 3 Main Learning Styles / REP Systems
Audio, Visual and Kinesthetic
What are some characteristics of how Visual Learners Learn?
- Seeing Pictures, understand with graphs, flow charts and maps; interested in whether things “look good”, tend to think and talk faster and use a lot of visual words when talking; have trouble remembering verbal instructions - takes notes using pictures and drawings
What are some characteristics of how Auditory Learners Learn?
- by Listening, they also like to be heard so they enjoy discussions - they can repeat things back to you - tone of voice is very important - interested in whether things “sound right” - like to be close enough to hear you.
What are some characteristics of Kinesthetic learners?
-They use all 5 senses when communicating, they like to learn by doing - 45 mins work to 15 mins break - respond to physical rewards and touch - memorize by doing or walking through things - interested in whether things “feel right”
Where do Off-the-job techniques take place?
outside the work setting - generally in a classroom - sometimes in games or simulations
What are the 9 Instructional Methods?
1- Lecture 2- Discussion 3- Case Study (long) 4- Case Incident (short) 5- BMT - Behaviour Modelling Training 6- Role Play 7- Simulations 8- Games 9- Action learning
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
- Do you like lectures?
Closed-ended Question (a yes or no answer)
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
- What type of Instructional Methods do you prefer?
Open-ended
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
- Do we agree that we like the blended-learning method because it accounts for many learning styles?
Overheard - to the whole group
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
- Billy, what do you think about lectures where the prof uses a lot of industry-specific jargon and a monotone voice?
Direct Question - to a specific person
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
“Tugsel, Can you use Games in the classroom to activate the neo-cortext and satisfy the repitilian portion of the brain or do you always have to use games in context of training with thorough de-briefing?” … “Class, what do you think?”
Relay Question - passing a question from a learner onto the group of learners
What Type of Discussion Question Question is this:
“Tugsel, what could go wrong with Reverse Role play?” … “think about it, what do you think could possibly go wrong?”
Reverse Question - asking it back to the asker
What Training Method is this?
trainees discuss, analyze, and solve problems based on a real situation.
Case Study Training Method
What are some Pros of the Case Study method?
Trainees can:
- Apply knowledge
- Deal with a variety of real-world problems
- learn how to make decisions and be creative
What Training Method is this?
one problem or issue is presented for analysis.
Case Incident Training Method
What Training Method is this?
Trainees observe a model performing a task and then attempt to imitate the observed behaviour.
Behaviour Modeling Training - BMT Training Method
What are the 4 Principles of BMT
1 - Observation (Modeling)
2 - Rehearsal (Practise)
3. Reinforcement (Reward)
4. Transfer
Observing someone handling a difficult work situation utilizing the correct company protocols then rehearsing that behaviour is
POSITIVE BMT
BMT is part of what Learning Theory?
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY
What Training Method is this?
Trainees are given the opportunity to practise new behaviours in a
safe environment
Role Play
Define REVERSE Role play
Trainees put themselves in another
person’s position - this can increase empathy and understanding
What are the 3 PHASES of ROLE PLAY as a Training Method?
1 - Development
2- Enactment
3 - Debriefing
What Training Method is this?
The use of operating models of physical or social events designed to represent reality
Simulation Training
What Training Method is this?
A method in which trainees solve
real-world problems and accept
responsibility for the solution.
Action learning Training Method
What Training Method is this?
Problem-based learning requires
trainees to solve real or simulated
open-ended problems.
Action learning Training method
What are some examples of the Action Learning Training Method?
Stretch Assignments / Difficult Projects, Job Swaps, Hardships
5 things to consider when choosing a Training Method
Dependent upon training objectives and learning outcomes Cost and resource availability On-the-job application Trainer skill and preferences Trainee preferences and characteristic
