week 7- lymph system Flashcards
A clear, watery fluid that surrounds body cells and flows in a system of thin-walled lymph vessels
lymph
does lymph contain RBCs or platelets
nope
what is in lymph?
lymphocytes and monocytes (less protein than blood)
drains the right side of the head
right lymphatic duct
drains the right side of the head
right lymphatic duct
drains the lower body and the left side of the head
Thoracic duct
what are the functions of the lymphatic system?
- drainage system
- absorb fats in teh small intestines and transport them to the blood stream
- immune function… duhhh
lymphadenitis
swollen lymph nodes
what lymphocytes produce antiboides
b-lymphcytes
where is the spleen located?
left upper quadrant of the abdomen
functions of the spleen:
- Destruction of old RBCs by macrophages
- Filtration of microorganisms and other foreign material from blood 3. Activation of lymphocytes – both B cells and T cells
- Storage of blood - especially RBCs and platelets
lymphocytes learn to recognize and accept the body’s own antigens as “self” or friendly” and don’t attack themselves
What is this called?
tolerance
Resistance present at BIRTH and NOT dependent on exposure to an antigen and there is NO immunological memory
natural immunity
Ability to recognize and remember specific antigens in an immune response
adaptive immunity
T cells recognize and remember specific antigens and produce (stronger/weaker) attacks each time the antigen is encountered
stronger
is vaccination natural or adaptive immunity?
adaptive immunity
Humoral immunity
B cells / antibodies
what cells produce immunoglobulins?
plasma cells (that were once B cells)
Cytotoxic T cells
(CD8+ T cells) - attach to antigens and directly kill them
Also secrete cytokines (interferons and interleukins)
Helper T cells
(CD4+ T cells) - assist B cells in making antibodies and stimulate T cells to attack antigen
Suppressor T cells (regulatory T cells) -
inhibit both B and T cells and prevent them from attacking the body’s own good cells
TOLERANCE
Dendritic cells
initiate adaptive immune response by “presenting” antigens to T and B cells showing them precisely what they need to counteract
HIV destroys what type of cells?
T cells
