week 6 - integumentary system / skin Flashcards
2 main layers of skin
- epidermis
- dermis
what strengthens adhesion between the 2 layers ?
epidermal ridges/ pegs & dermal papillae
what is hypodermis ?
loost CT layer in adipose
what is keratinosation ?
- keratinocytes layers in epidermis
- migrate from basal -> surface in 20-30 days
what are the epidermis layers ?
- stratum corneum
- stratum lucidum
- stratum granulosum
- stratum spinosum
- stratum basale
what is epidermis made of ?
90% keratinocytes , melanocytes, langerhands cells, merkel cells
what is dermis made of ?
dense irregular CT - mostly collagen & elastic fibres
include; sensory receptors, sweat, glands, hairs
what is hair ?
long keratinised structure
what is hair shaft ?
portion protuding beyond skin
what muscle is responsible for pulling hair erect when cold ?
arrector pili
what is the nail bed ?
epidermis beneath nail
what is the lacrimal apparatus ?
lacrimal gland - produces/drainages lacrimal fluid (tears)
function of tears ?
moisten, nutrient supply, antimicrobial flush
what are 3 organisation layers of eyeball ?
- fibrous (sclera)
- vascular
- inner (retina)
what makes up the fibrous layer of eye ?
sclera, cornear
what makes up the vascular layer of eye?
lens, iris,(colour), pupil, ciliary body (muscles & process), choroid, fovea,
what makes up the inner layer of eye ?
retina, optic nerve, optic disc (blind spot)
what happens to ciliary muscles when eyes focuses ?
near - contracted
far - relaxed
what is the difference between rods and cones ?
cones - colour
rods - monochrome
layers of retina from internal -> external
ganglion cell -> bipolar cell -> rods & cones
what is in the anterior segment ?
aqueous humour
what is in the posterior segment ?
vitrous humour
what is the optic chiasm ?
intersection of the 2 optic nerves `
where is the ear located ?
temporal bone
