What is the threshold for stuttering diagnosis?
3% or more SLDs out of all words
- 25% of SLDs must be prolongations or blocks
why are bilingual children at risk of over/underdiagnosis?
-over: because they have higher prevalence of mazes, biligualism is misconcpetualized as a risk for stuttering, people overuse teh word stutteirng to descibe disfluent speech in EL Learners
- under: misattributing of silence to low profiecny in teh classroom language
So how is “real” diagnosis possible?
Include primary and secondary indicators of early
stuttering in children
Diagnostic based on primary behaviors: Average of 3 or more sound repetitions, prolongations, or blocks per 100
words
- 72% or more of disfluencies are SLDs
* 25% or more of disfluencies are prolongations or blocks
Diagnostic based on Secondary behaviors:
* Feelings of frustration
* Negative self-image; negative emotions around own speech
* Avoiding eye-contact
