What are the 3 factors of voice disorders?
Respiratory:lungs, airways, nose, mouth
Phonation:Vocal fold action
Resonance:Sound quality as ‘shaped’ by oral
and nasal cavity
what is the glottis?
the opening between vocal folds
how do vocal chords work in action w breathing?
exhale pushes them open and then the velocity pulls them shut(bernie effect)
What are features of helathy vocal folds?
smooth, hydrated, able to open an close properly
what are the 4 voice attributes?
pitch, loudness, resonance, and sound quality
what is the prevalence of voice disorders?
1% of adults and 6% of kids
what does the velum do?
controls resonance
The position of the velum determines
whether air can enter the nasal cavity
What are the organic causes of voice disorders?
-inflammation/infection
- tumors
-vocal nodules
- vocal fold paralasis
What are the functional causes of voice disorders?
-anxiety/stress
-strain/oversue
-occupational hazard
what percent of voice disorders are caused by misuse?
45-80%
