What are the two definitions of stuttering?
(a) To speak disfluently, e.g. out of being nervous or unsure what to say.
(b) A disorder of the neuromotor control of speech that causes
involuntary speech disfluencies. Not caused by being nervous or unsure of what to say.
How many adults stutter?
about 1% of adults stutter
What is Aphasia?
It is a language disorder, not an intellectual one.
It is not to be confused with dementia
About how many people have aphasia?
About 2 million people in the US have Aphasia.
What are the 4 types of speech and language disorders?
Language, fluency, speech, and voice.
What are language disorders and give an example of one.
Language disorders
- Effect word finding, ability to produce or comprehend words or sentences
- Aphasia is an example.
What are fluency disorders and give 2 examples.
- Effect ability to produce speech fluency or smoothly
-No signs of impaired articulation except when stuttering. - Stuttering and Cluttering are examples.
- Word Finding and ability to produce or Comprehend sentences are unaffected
What are speech disorders, what are the 2 types, and give 2 examples.
-Impairment affecting the production of speech sounds
-no physical impairment
- the 2 types are phonological and articulatory
- two examples are Apraxia of speech(phono) and dysarthria(articulatory)
What are voice disorders and give 3 examples?
- Impairment effecting the production of speech sounds
- often physical impairment
-laryngitis, Larynx cancer, and spasmodic dysphonia are examples
What are phonological speech disorders?
Speech sounds that are produced
may not be the intended ones, but
speech sounds that are produced
may sound unremarkable.
