What are 5 fields that SLPs work in?.
Schools, Hospitals, Private Practices, Skilled Nursing Facilities(SNFs), and in orgs serving people with a specific disorder
What is functional Speech sound disorder?
A phonological speech disorder that is characterized by inconsistent pronunciation of a given sound and word.
What is an impairment?
-any loss or abnormality of bodily structure or function.
- may or may not function well in daily living and working situations
What is a disorder?
-a reduced ability in performing activities of daily living in a particular context or environment
What is a handicap?
a (social, educational, or occupational) disadvantage that results from an impairment or a disability. The disadvantage may be the result of factors in the person’s environment, including physical and attitudinal barriers
What are the two models of disability?
The medical model and the social model
What is the medical model of disability?
- the disability is a feature of the person and the disability is caused by an impairment.
- believes that the disability needs medical care/treatment/intervention provided by a medical professional.
- The goal is to, with treatment, correct the problem
What is the social model of disability?
- the disability is a socially created problem that’s caused by physical environment, attitudes towards impairments, legal barriers, and/or social environment.
- Disability requires a political response
- goal is to change the social, physical, and legal environment
