Tetracycline “cyclines” (Oral Antibiotics) MOA and indication

- Tetracycline - Minocycline - Doxycycline
- active against P. acnes - these are broad spectrum antibiotics
- indicated for mod to severe acne and inflammatory acne resistant to other therapies

Tetracycline’s contraindications
A
- Pregnancy category X
- contraindicated in kids less than 8 years - causes teeth staining
- Can take E-mycin or Azithromycin

Teracycline’s ADRs
A
- photosensitivity - sunscreen must be worn

Tetracycline’s pt education
A
- must take on an empty stomach (increases absorption)
- do not take with dairy products - calcium containing products must be avoided from 2 hours before to 2 hours after taking these medications (binds to calcium)
