Week 5 - Animal Reproduction Flashcards
What are the methods of asexual reproduction?
Fission
Budding
Fragmentation
Describe fission
Splitting into two equal parts
Describe budding
New individuals form on parent, then grow and detatch where it will finish developing
Describe fragmentation
Splitting of an adult into 2 fragments, mitotic cell division will grow back the missing bits
What is particular about fission, budding and fragmentation
They’re only possible in invertebrates
Describe parthenogenesis
Asexual reproduction
FISH AND REPTILES
New individuals come from unfertilized eggs.
Because of crossing over, genetically independent
Describe spawning
External sexual reproduction
Females lay eggs, males follow close behind to fertilize. This synchronized behaviour is controlled by pharamones
What is the oviduct?
Duct that conveys eggs via peristalsis
What kind of gland are the ovaries?
endocrine AND exocrine
What is the endometrium?
The inside lining of the uterus
What is special about female arthorpod reproductive systems?
Many have a spermatheca, which allows them to store sperm and choose when to use it
Are testes endocrine or exocrine?
BOTH
What are the three accessory glands to the male reproductive gland?
- Seminal vesicles
- Prostate glands
- Bulbourethral glands
