Week 5 Flashcards
Important time in which experience can have dramatic & long-lasting effects.
Critical period
Ability of the nervous system to change in response to experience or the environment
Neuroplasticity
Neurons that synapse on the damaged neuron degenerate too
Transneuronal degeneration
Color or shades of gray (for vision)
Wavelength
Brightness (for vision)
Amplitude
The bending of light back towards its source; accounts for most of the light we see
Reflection
Object retains light; cannot be seen but can be felt
Absorption
Capture light & form detailed spatial images
Optical functions of the eye
Transduce light into neuronal signals, then relay & process those signals
Neural functions of the eye
Allows light to enter the retina. Pupillary light reflex regulates the intensity of light entering the eye
Pupil
Refracts light to focus it on the retina in the back of the eyes
Lens
Area where blood vessels and optic nerve exit the eye. No photoreceptors.
Blind spot
Contains light sensitive cells (photoreceptors)
Retina
Scotopic vision: dim light. No color, low acuity
Rods
Photopic vision: bright light. Color, high acuity
