Week 4 - Sensory pathways and somatic nervous system Flashcards
Define sensory pathway?
Series of neurons that relays sensory information from receptors to CNS
Define sensory receptor?
Specialised cells that monitor specific conditions
Afferent division pathways?
Somatic and visceral
Efferent division pathway?
Somatic motor portion
5 general senses?
temp, pain, touch, pressure, vibration
5 special senses?
Smell, taste, sight, balance, hearing
Define transduction
Conversion of an arriving stimulus into an action potential by a sensory receptor
Define adaptation?
Reduction of receptor sensitivity in the presence of a constant stimulus
3 types of sensory receptors?
Exteroceptors
Proprioceptors
Interceptors
Define First - order neuron
Sensory neuron that delivers sensations to the CNS
Define second - order neuron
Interneuron in spinal cord or brainstem that receives info from first - order neuron
Define third - order neuron
Neuron in thalamus that must receive info from second - order neuron
3 somatic sensory pathways?
Spinothalamic
Posterior column
Spinocerebellar
Define spinothalamic pathway
Carries sensation of crude touch, pressure, pain and temp
Define posterior column pathway
Carries sensations of fine touch, vibration, pressure
Define spinocerebellar pathway?
Conveys info about positions of muscles, tendons and joints from spinal cord to cerebellum
What is the function of the somatic nervous system
Controls contractions of skeletal muscles
3 somatic motor pathways?
Corticospinal
Medial
Lateral
Define upper motor neuron
Cell body lies in a CNS processing center
Define lower motor neuron
Cell body lies in a nucleus of brainstem or spinal cord
Autonomic nervous system function?
Involuntary control of visceral effectors
Two divisions of the Autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
Sympathetic division function
Prepares body for emergencies
Parasympathetic division function
Conserves energy and maintains resting metabolic rate
Medial somatic motor pathway function
Controls muscle to and gross movements of neck, trunk, and proximal limb muscles
Lateral somatic motor pathway function
Controls muscle to and precise movements of distal parts of limbs
Corticospinal somatic motor neuron pathway function?
Provides voluntary control over skeletal muscles
Exterorecptors function?
Provide info about external environment
Proprioceptors function?
Report positions of skeletal muscles and joints
Interceptors function
Monitor visceral organs and functions
