Week 3 - Spinal cord and the brain Flashcards
Define reflex(es)
A quick automatic nerve response
What is a spinal reflex
A reflex controlled by the spinal cord without input from the brain
What are the two spinal roots and their neurons?
Anterior - axons of motor neurons
posterior - axons of sensory neurons
What are the three spinal meninges (outer to inner)
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
What is a tract?
Bundle of axons in the CNS
Sensory neurons function?
Bring info into the CNS
Motor neurons function?
Send commands from CNS out to peripheral effectors (outgoing)
5 Components of a reflex arc (in order)
- Sensory receptor
- Sensory neuron
- CNS
- Motor neuron
Peripheral effector
4 types of classification of neurons
- Development
- Motor response
- Complexity of neural circuit
Site of information processing
Cerebrum Function
Controls higher mental functions (conscious thought, memory)
Cerebellum Function
Coordinates repetitive body movements
Thalamus Function
Relays and processes sensory information
Hypothalamus
Emotions, hormone production, autonomic function
Brainstem Function
Relays information between spinal cord and cerebrum
Midbrain function
Processes sight, sound and associated reflexes
