Motivation
Psychological processes that underlie the direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior or thought
Performance Equation
P= M x A x O
(Performance, Motivation, Ability, Opportunity)
Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation to do something because of external rewards (i.e. money)
Intrinsic Motivation
The motivation that comes from the task itself (i.e. satisfaction)
Content Theories
Focuses on identifying internal factors that energize employee motivation
Process Theories
Describes how various person factors and situation factors affect motivation
Locke & Latham’s Goal-Setting Theory
Goals that are specific and difficult lead to higher performance and chance of accomplishment
Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory
Motivation is a function of 5 needs displayed in a hierarchy
Mclelland’s Acquired Needs Theory
Motivation is a function of 3 needs that vary between people and are acquired over time
Self-Determination Theory
3 inherent needs drive internal motivation
Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygeine Theory
Proposes that job satisfaction comes from motivating factors and dissatisfaction comes from hygiene factors
Equity Theory
Perceived equality in the organization impacts employee motivation
Justice Theory
Perceived fairness in an organization influences employee behaviors and attitudes
Expectancy Theory
People do things that lead to desired outcomes
Job Design
Any set of activities that alter jobs to improve employee’s experience and productivity
