Week 3 notes Flashcards
what is primary hemostasis?
platelets in circulation are attracted to injured areas and will stick to the site and each other
what is secondary hemostasis?
fibrin strands form a net around platelet clumps to stabilize them at the site
what is tertiary hemostasis?
when the clot is no longer needed, a process is activated that breaks down the fibrin
primary coagulation disorders are usually?
an inherited defect
Secondary coagulation disorders result from?
decrease or increase of platelets, nutritional deficiencies, liver disease or toxicity
A coagulation panel test includes?
platelet count, fibrinolysis and platelet function, bleeding time, whole blood clotting time, clot retraction test, activated clotting time (ACT),
Coagulation cascades test?
activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), one-stage prothrombin time (OSPT)
what does ACT do?
evaluates all major clotting factors except VII
what does whole blood clotting time do?
tests the intrinsic clotting pathway
What does buccal mucosa bleeding time do?
detects abnormalities in platelet function
what does clot reaction test do?
evaluates platelets as well as intrinsic and extrinsic pathways
What does fibrinogen determination do?
tests specifically fibrinogen concentration
what does OSPT do?
evaluates the extrinsic pathway
What is PIVKA?
proteins induced by vitamin K absence
What do we use PIVKA for?
to differentiate toxicity from primary hemostatic defects
