what is diversity competency?
the ability for individuals and systems to respond respectfully and effectively to individuals, families and communities f rom all diverse backgrounds in a manner that protects and preserve their dignity and recognises, affirms and values their differences, similarities and worth
what is stereotyping
abbreviated or simplified perceptions of people tht are often misleading or inaccurate - especially when aligned with grips of people
what is inclusive language?
language that does not demean, insult, exclude, stereotype or trivialise people on the basis of their ‘difference’
what is dementia
several diseases characterised by a decline in mental ability, memory, thinking, problem-solving, concentration and perception
what are the three barriers to effective communication?
patient - sensitivity
institutional - staff, policies
environmental - unfamiliar environment are challenging
what are the main reported reactions to people experiencing depression?
disregard - difficulty understanding the person’s experience
inadequacy - professionals can feel inadequate if strategies are not helpful in making a quick impact on the depression
frustration - can develop when suggested strategies are unsuccessful and the person continues to feel hopeless and helpless
hopelessness - when person unable to help the other and they become convinced that nothing can be done to help them
what is the main cause of negative reactions to people with depression?
lack of knowledge about depression of if they unrealistically high exceptions of their capacity to help
what is a difficult conversation?
when someone is ambivalent about a conversation it can be becausr there is no easy answer to the conversation, no pathway you want to walk down
