Week 2- The Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Transmits signals between brain and body
Somatic, Automatic System
Somatic Nervous System
nerves that control skeletal muscles, voluntary and reflexive movements
-receives sensory input from body
Automatic Nervous System
Regulates activity
Sympathetic- initiates fight/flight
Parasympathetic- returns body to non emergency state
Parts of Hindbrain
Bottom of brain
Made of brain stem, cerebellum, reticular formation
Midbrain
Just above hindbrain
Relay station between sensory and motor areas
Superior Colliculus- visual attention (peripheral vision)
Inferior Colliculus- auditory attention (background noise)
Forebrain
-emotion, thinking, reasoning
-contains ventricles filled with fluid that protects the brain from impact against skull
Maintains Basal Ganglia, Limbic System, Hypothalamus, Thalamus
Cerebral Cortex
Outer layer of brain
Thought, language, personality
Made of Frontal Lobe, Parietal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe
Temporal Lobe: Auditory Cortex
top of temporal lobe
hearing
Temporal lObe- Wernicke’s Area
back of temporal lobe
understanding language
Corpus Callosum
- neural fibres connecting 2 hemispheres and allow for communication between the 2 hemispheres
Left Side of Brain
math and language
Right side of brain
visual and spatial skills
- recognition of visual stimuli - musical processing
Split Brain Patients
split brain into 2 hemispheres
- can match objects on the left because the rights side of the brain controls the left side of the body and controls visual and spatial skills. But can’t name objects because left side controls language
