Understanding Intelligence Flashcards
Savant
individual with low mental capacity in most domains but extraordinary abilities in other specific areas such as music, math, or art
Factor Analysis
statistical technique that examines correlations between variables to find clusters of related variables
Single Level of Intelligence
General Intelligence Factor (g)- a person’s mental energy
- Believed that some people had more powerful (g) than others
- General intelligence test scores predict how efficient impulses are conducted along nerve fibres and across synapses
S
skill or ability for a given task
Primary Mental Abilities
7 different clusters of intelligence
-fluency, verbal comprehension, numeric abilities, spatial visualization memory, perceptual speed, reasoning
Hierarchical Model of Intelligence
Overarching general intelligence made up of small number of sub abilities
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence
divides intelligence into three distinct types (analytical, practical, creative)
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence: Analytical Intelligence
“book smart”
- ability to reason logically through problems
- type of intelligence measured on intelligence tests
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence: Practical Intelligence
“street smart”
- ability to find solutions in real world problems
- believed to influence performance and success
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence: : Creative Intelligence
ability to create new ideas and generate novel solutions to problems
i.e. developing hypotheses and testing them
Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence
- There are at least 8 (now 9) different forms of intelligence, independent from the others
- Difficult to test
- Influential in educational settings (learning styles)
Stereotype Threat
people become aware of stereotypes about their social group and become fearful of being reduced to that stereotype
Battle of the Sexes
- Females then to be better at verbal abilities, memory tasks, and ability to read basic emotions
- Males are better at visuospatial abilities such as aiming
