Measuring Brain Activity/ Lesioning Flashcards
Lesioning
Intentionally damage brain of animals
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
electromagnetic pulse delivered to targeted area od brain
Temporarily disrupts brain activity
Computerized Tomograph (CT)
X rays sent through braincreates image base on density of tissue
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Images of brain created based on how different areas absorb/release energy while in an energy field
More accurate images
Diffusion Tensor Imaging
Measures white matter pathways in brain
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Measure patterns of brain activity with use of multiple electrodes attached to scalp
Event Related Potentials (ERP)
-Same as EEG but computer records when stimulus was given
Can collect average pattern of data
Magnetoencephalography (MEG)
Measures tiny magnetic fields created by electrical activity of nerve cells in brain
Not clear to see where brain activity is occurring
PET
radioactive isotope injected into blood, moves to regions of brain during activity
White Matter
bundles of connected neurons in cerebral cortex
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
blow to head causes quick stretching of axons (twist and tear, are damaged)
Neurons die and tau proteins build up
Only diagnosable via autopsy, maybe can use PET scan
