Week 13 Flashcards
Define gait
A persons manner of walking
1 stride = what
2 steps
1 step = what
one heel contact to opposite heel contact
2 phases of gait
Stance
swing
What is double support phase
When stance phase overlaps
- differentiates walking from running
what is the % of stance and swing phase during free speed walking
Stance phase = 62%
Swing phase = 38%
Events of walking gait in order
- Heal contact (strike)
- Foot flat
- Mid stance
- Heel off
- Toe off
- Heel contact
What is excess hip drop from
Abductor muscle weakness
At right heel contact, right hip…..
externally rotated
During right leg support, right hip…..
Internally rotates until left heel contact
During right leg swing, right hip……
Right hip externally rotates
Effects of eversion on gait
- Increases mid-foot flexibility
Foot can handle variable terrain
Effects of inversion on gait
- Increase mid-foot rigidity
- Equips foot for load bearing and push off
Timing of muscle activation
- Gluteus Medius 0 - 20, Vastii 0 -20, tibialis anterior 0 - 10
- Gastrocnemius 0 - 50
- Iliopsoas 30 - 60
- Hamstrings 8 - 100
- Gluteus maximus 90 - 100
What happens to gait during running
- Double support phase replaced by flight phase
- Stance phase becomes very brief
- Joint ROMs and joint angle velocities increase
- Jogging more efficient than fast walking
