Week 1: The Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is the structural difference between peripheral and central nervous system?
- Central: enclosed in bone
- Peripheral: outside of bone
What is the clinical difference between peripheral and central nervous system?
- Central: myotomal/dermatomal distribution
- Peripheral: peripheral nerve distribution
In the spinal cord, where do we see the transition from CNS to PNS?
Across the spinal nerve between where the spinal roots converge and rami divide
Review brachial and lumbosacral plexuses
-
Sort axon size by speed, from fastest to slowest
Large myelinated –> Medium myelinated –> Small myelinated –> Unmyelinated
Speed of large myelinated axons
70-130 m/s
Speed of medium myeliniated axons
12-45 m/s
Speed of small myelinated axons
3-30 m/s
Speed of unmyelinated axons
0.2-2 m/s
Group for large myelinated axons
- A(alpha)
- Ia, Ib
Group for medium myelinated axons
- A(delta)
- II, A(beta)
Group for small myelinated axons
- B
- A(delta)
Group for unmyelinated axons
- C
- C
Large myelinated efferents
Extrafusal muscle fibers
Medium myelinated efferents
Intrafusal muscle fibers
