Week 1: Neurological System Development Flashcards
When does most of the brain develop?
By 8 weeks, during the fetal stage
Describe the progression of brain structures
- Neural plate –> Neural tube
- Neural tube –> brain and spinal cord
- Brain –> Ventricles; brainstem and cortex sections
- Spinal cord –> sclerotome, myotome, dermatome
At what age does the spinal cord stop growing?
Age 4-5
At what vertebral level does the spinal cord end up at?
L1-L2
At what age is the brain 95% the size of an adults?
6
At what age does myelination complete?
Early 20s
At what age does full brain development occur?
25
Growing into a deficit
Neurological deficits are not seen until the time that a trait would normally be seen, such as walking
Tethered spinal cord
- Adherence of the spinal cord to a bony vertebrae
- Causes lower limb sensory and motor deficits
- Will manifest as a child get taller, putting tension on the spinal cord
Neural tube disorders
- Affects formation of the brain
- Chiari malformation
- Spina bifida
Chiari malformation
- Noticed at an early age
Spina bifida
- Noticed at an early age
Non-progressive abnormalities
- Fetal drug syndromes
- Cerebral palsy
Fetal drug syndromes
- Malformation of critical areas
- May grow into deficit if the area affected is a cognitive area
Cerebral palsy
- Movement and postural control
- Varies in severity
- Damage to a developing brain
