Week 1: Pathways- DCML Flashcards
3 types of pathways that relay sensory information to the brain
- Conscious relay
- Divergent relay
- Unconscious relay
Conscious relay
- High fidelity
- Somtatotopically organized info about location and type to stimulation to the cortex
- Discriminate proprioception, light touch, pain, and temperature
Divergent relay
- Convey info to variety of locations in brainstem and cerebrum
- Slow pain
Unconscious relay
- Movement related info to cerebellum
- Non-conscious proprioception
Columns involved in conscious relay
- DCML
- Spinothalamic
What information does the DCML process?
- Discriminative light touch, proprioception, vibration
- Ascends ipsilaterally
Where does crude awareness of sensory info take place?
Thalamus
Where does info discrimination take place?
Cortex
Discriminative touch
- Localization of touch and vibration
- Ability to determine 2 closely spaced points of touch
Conscious proprioception
Awareness of the movement and relative position of body parts
Primary neuron for DCML
Receptors to medulla
Secondary neuron for DCML
Medulla to thalamus
Third order neuron for DCML
Thalamus to cortex
Where does decussation occur in the DCML?
In the medulla
Where are the ends of the primary neuron located in the DCML?
- Distal: projects to the cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglion
- Proximal: ascend in ipsilateral dorsal column
