Week 1 - Kinesiology key terms Flashcards
Axial skeleton
Skull
Vertebra
Ribs
Appendicular skeleton
Extremities
Shoulder girdle
Pelvis
Flexion
Decrease in relative angle of joint between 2 adjacent segments, bending movement
Extension
Increase in relative angle of joint between 2 adjacent segments, straightening movement
Abduction
Movement away from midline
Adduction
Movement towards midline
Medial/internal rotation
Anterior surface moves toward midline, posterior surface moves away from midline
Lateral/external rotation
Posterior surface moves toward midline, anterior surface moves away from midline
Elevation
Raising of scapula
Depression
Lowering of scapula
Protraction
Scapula move apart
Retraction
Scapula move toward each other
Upward rotation
Bottom of scapula moves away from trunk, top of scapula moves towards trunk
Downward rotation
Top of scapula moves away from trunk, bottom of scapula moves towards trunk
Horizontal adduction
Combination of flexion and internal rotation of arm or thigh across body to midline, horizontal to ground
Horizontal abduction=
combination of extension and external rotation of arm or thigh away from midline, horizontal to ground
pronation
Palm rotates to face backward/down
Supination
palm rotates to face forward/up
Lateral flexion
Used when head and trunk tilt sideways
Radial flexion
movement of hand towards thumb
ulnar flexion
movement of hand towards little finger
Plantar flexion
foot moves down, increase in angle between foot and leg
Dorsiflexion
food moves up, decrease in angle between foot and leg
Inversion
Medial border of foot raised so sole of foot faces in
Eversion
Lateral border of foot raised so sole of foot faces out
Circumduction
End of segment moves in circular path (possible in any joint/segment that can move in 2 directions)
Planes and axes
Sagittal plane
Mediolater axis
Tranverse plane
Vertical axis
Frontal plane
Anteroposterior axis
