Q

What is pressure release fracturing?

A

Pressure released as overlaying layers have eroded away. Looks like the rocks are stretching.

Q

What is thermal expansion/contraction?

A

Heat expands rock, cold contracts. This caused the rocks to crack or break apart

Q

What is frost wedging?

A

Water freezes in the crack of the rock and the expansion wedges the rock apart

Q

What is abrasion?

A

Mechanical weathering of rocks by friction and impact. Increases surface area.

Q

What is salt cracking?

A

Salts found in pores of rocks crystallize and widens the crack and pushes grains apart

Q

What is hydrolysis?

A

Water reacts with existing minerals and causes the minerals to look grey and discolored

16
Q

What is wind erosion?

A

The transportation and deposit of soil by wind (mostly occurs in places with dry, loose soils)

17
Q

What is gravity erosion?

A

Movement of rocks by gravitational force. Material loosened by weathering is moved from higher to lower ground

18
Q

What is glacier erosion

A

The removal and transportation of rocks by glaciers. (For example, glacier meltwater can freeze in the cracks of a rock and the rock is pushed outwards. The rock is then carried away by flowing ice of the moving glacier)
