Weathering Flashcards
Name two ways how the earths crust naturally change
Weathering and erosion
Define the word denudation
The processes of weathering and erosion
Name two types of weathering
Mechanical
Chemical
Define the word weathering and erosion
Weathering
-The breakdown and decay of rocks
Erosion
-The breakdown of rocks and the removal of the particles that result
Name three causes of Erosion
Moving water (rivers, sea,) Moving ice (glacier) Moving air (wind)
What effect does Mechanical Weathering do to rocks?
And name one type of Mechanical weathering
Freeze thaw
It causes rock to be broken up into smaller pieces
Define the word freeze thaw
It is the break-up of rock by frost action
Where does freeze thaw occur?
It occurs where there is precipitation and the temperature rises above and falls below freezing point. It occurs mainly in upland areas
Describe the process of freeze thaw
By day
-water seeps into joints in the rock
By night
-The temperature drops below freezing point. The water freezes and expands. This makes the cracks bigger and put strain on the rock
Over time
-After repeated freezing and thawing,The rock splits. These pieces of rock are called scree. They roll down the mountainside and collect in piles at the bottom of the the slope
What are scree?
Loose pieces of rock with sharp edges and are broken off by freeze thaw
Name one type of chemical weathering
Carbonation
Describe how stalactites are formed
When water flows down through the ground and into a cave, it dissolves a mineral called calcite (a major building block of limestone) and carries it through cracks in the ceiling. The dripping water leaves behind traces of calcite, which slowly builds up on the ceiling until a stalactite takes shape, hanging down like an icicle.
Water from the end of the stalactite leaves more calcite in a pile on the cave floor, and pretty soon a cone-like stalagmite forms.
