Rocks Flashcards
Name the three different groups of rocks
Igneous
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
What are rocks made up of?
Rocks are made up of various minerals that are held together by natural cement
Name two types of rocks that run under the category of Igneous
Basalt
Granite
Name two types of rocks that run under the category of Sedimentary
Limestone
Sandstone
Shales
Name two types of rocks that run under the category of Metamorphic
Quartzite
Marble
What is the most common type of rock in Ireland
Limestone
How are Igneous rocks formed
Igneous are formed as a result of volcanic activity.
Hot molten magma cooled down and hardens, either on a surface or within the crust.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
They were formed from the remains (sediments) of other rocks, plant life and animal life. These sediments were deposited on the beds of seas and lakes as well as on land. They were then compressed and cemented together.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are those that have been changed in shape or form by great heat and pressure. They already existed as igneous or sedimentary rocks before being changed.
How are rocks divided into certain groups?
Rocks are divided into groups according to how they are formed.
Select one igneous rock and explain how it was formed
Basalt formed when lava spread out across the Earth’s surface. It cooled very quickly and solidified because it was exposed to the air.As a result,it has tiny crystals that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
The most famous section of it is the Giant’s Causeway.
What are Limestone used for?
It’s used to make monuments and is the raw material for cement and Ground limestones are used by farmers to improve soil fertility.
Where does limestone usually form?
They are formed on the beds of shallow warm seas from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures.
What’s the colour of the sandstone
Sandstone is red/brown in colour
