EarthQuakes Flashcards
Elaborate the system of an Earthquake
The plates move along the fault line
The focus is the point deep in the Earth’s crust where the Earthquake begins
The epicentre is the point on the surface directly above the focus. It is where the tremors are the strongest
How does earthquake occur?
It occurs at boundaries where plates collide or when two plates pass by each other that builds up an energy causing an earthquake.
What are Aftershocks?
Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur a few hours or days after the main earthquake
Why are aftershocks as dangerous as the original tremors?
They often cause more damage than the original earthquake because building and structures are already weakened by the first tremors.
Name three advantages and disadvantages of Volcanic Activities
Advantages
- Particles released during volcanic eruptions make the land fertile.
- Volcanic deposits are also used as building materials
- Geothermal energy is created by the eruption which generates electrical power
Disadvantages
- Lava can destroy the city
- Volcanic Activity can sometimes cause tsunamis
- Chemicals can ruin the farm areas
What instrument is used to record an earthquake?
Seismograph or seismometer
What instrument is used to measure or describe the strength of an Earthquake?
Richter Scale
What instrument is used to gauge the Earthquake based on the Destruction?
Merculli Scale
Name three economic effects of an Earthquake?
Buildings destroyed
Repair damage
People lose jobs
Name three social effects of an earthquake
Death
Sickness or Water supply damage
Lose of home a family
Name three environmental effects of the Earthquake
Mudslide
Landslide
Avalanche
What is a tsunami and explain how it occurs?
A tsunami is a giant wave that is caused by an underwater earthquake
