Rivers Flashcards
Define the source of the river.
Where the river starts
Define the course of a river
the route the river takes
Define the estuary of a river
The part of the river which is tidal
Define the tributary of a river
A stream that joins a larger river
Define the mouth of a river
Where the river meets the sea or lake
Define the watershed of a river
The area of highland surrounding the drainage basin
Define the drainage basin of a river
The land drained by the river
Where do rivers usually begin?
From its source up high from the highland areas such as mountains.
Name the three stages of the river
Youthful stage
Mature stage
Old stage
On what stage does erosion usually occur at? Explain.
The Youthful stage
Because the current of the waters in the Youthful stage is stronger thus it uses more energy to erode quickly
Name three ways how rivers can shape the landscape.Explain
Erosion- The rivers wears/breaks down the landscape
Transportation- The river carries its land
Deposition- the river drops off its land that it was carrying
Explain with the aid of diagram how v-shaped valley are formed?
V-shaped valley is a feature of erosion due to mechanical weathering. It is a landform found in the Youthful Stage of the river.
One example is the youthful stage of the River Liffey.
As the river flows down through its course, the gradient becomes more steeper due to the process of Hydraulic Action. The river wears away the bed and the top is exposed for weathering. It erodes and the debris will then drop into the river, forming a v-shaped land.
Explain with the aid of diagram how deltas are formed?
A delta is formed by denudation. It occurs in the mouth of the river, where the river meets the sea.It is a landform found in the old stage of a river. The Delta is a triangular fan-shaped river flowing and spreading through the mouth of the sea
One example is the River Nile.
Explain in your own words how a waterfall is formed?
Waterfalls are a form of erosion. One example can be found in the Youthful Stage of the River Liffey.
Waterfalls are formed when rivers fall over a vertical slope. The hard rock is compressed above the soft layer of rock underneath. The soft rock is eroded by the processes of hydraulic, attrision, abrasion and solution.
As the river flows,a plunge pool is created in the base where water is deeper there.
The river then retreats upstream and the sams process occurs over and over again.
