The Earth Flashcards
What is a solar energy and where do we get it from?
A solar energy is what provides us heat and light from the Sun
Why is the earth called the “MIRACLE PLANET”?
The earth is called the miracle planet because it’s the only planet that contains living things and supports life because of water and oxygen.
Describe Earth’s shape
Earth is a sphere that is slightly flattened in the North and South Pole and bulgees out in the Equator.
how much space does the water cover the earth’s surface?
More than two thirds
how much space does the mountains cover the earth’s surface?
Almost one tenth
how much space does the forest cover the earth’s surface?
Almost 1 quarter (1 fourth)
how much space does the dessert cover the earth’s surface?
1 eight
When was the earth formed?
4.5 billion years ago
Name the layers of the earth
Crust
Mantle
Core (outer and inner)
How does the heat from core affect the movement of magma?
The heat that the core generates causes the magma from the mantle to move upwards
Which layer is made up of nickel and iron?
Inner core
What are magma?
Distinguish the difference between lava and Magma
Magma are the molten or semi-molten rocks that forms the mantle beneath the crust
What are plates?
A rigid layer of the Earth’s crust that is believed to drift slowly.
They are broken but fit perfectly well like a jigsaw.
Seperate sections into which the crust of the earth is broken
they float on top of SEMI MOLTEN magma
What are plate boundaries?
The place where two plates meet and is usually associated with earthquakes, fold mountains and tsunamis
What is crust consist of?
Solid rocks
