Constituents of weather/climate
-Rainfall
-Temperature
-Wind direction
-Wind strength
-Air pressure
-Sunshine
-Humidity
-Cloud cover
Ideal conditions/characteristics for a Stevenson Screen
-Sited away from artificial sources of heat
-Screen door faces away from sunlight(so direct sunlight does not affect readings)
-Have security measure or protection(to prevent damage by people or animals)
-Sited on grass or bare earth(other surfaces may absorb the Sun’s heat and re-radiate it upwards, affecting temperature readings)
-Sited on level ground
-Sited in an open area, away from trees/buildings(so air can circulate freely/screen is not under shade)
-Has a roof(to prevent rain or direct heat from affecting the instruments)
-Has a hinged door for access
How a rain gauge works
-Precipitation falls inside metal cylinder
-Precipitation goes through a metal funnel into a collecting bottle
-Contents are transferred into a standard measuring cylinder and measured at regular intervals
How a wind vane works
-Wind moves arrows
-Arrow points towards the direction that the wind is coming from
How a cup anemometer works
-Wind forces cups to rotate(cups are connected to a meter)
-Meter converts rotations into wind speed
How sunshine recorders work
-Sun’s rays pass through a glass sphere
-They burn a piece of a heat-sensitive black card(the card has hours and minutes of the day on it)
-As the sun appears to move around, it burns a line
-Line indicates when and for how long there was sunshine
