Environmental risks of economic development Definitions Flashcards
Desertification
the spread of desert conditions
Global warming
the natural greenhouse effect due to the Earth having an atmosphere that traps greenhouse gases(was fairly constant up to 250 years ago)
Enhanced global warming
the impact of additional greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere by economic activity in the past 250 years
Sustainability
the ability to fulfill the resource requirements of the present generation without reducing the ability of future generations to have the same access to the benefits of these resources
Sustainable development
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Biotic
living parts of an ecosystem(eg. plants and animals)
Abiotic
non-living parts of an ecosystem(eg. minerals, soil, air, etc.)
Conservation
the care of species, resources and environments so that they will survive for future generations
Ecosystem
a system of links between plants and animals(the living community) and the habitats where they live, including the non-living environment
Soil erosion
the gradual process of movement and transport of the upper layer of soil(topsoil) by water, wind and other forces
