Rural area
a settlement with a population of less than 10,000 people
Urban area
a settlement with high population density and many manmade features
Market town
a settlement where goods produced in the surrounding areas are bought and sold
Industrial town
a settlement where people work in factories, processing raw materials or assembling products
Port
a settlement where goods are imported and exported by ship
Tourist resort
a place which people visit to enjoy a vacation
Settlement hierarchy
a ranking/classification of settlements in any area according to their size or the services that they produce
High order settlements
large settlements
Middle order settlements
medium-sized settlements
Low order settlements
small settlements
High order services
goods or services that are bought infrequently and are expensive
Low order services
goods or services that are bought frequently and which are usually cheap
Sphere of influence
the area served by a settlement
Range
the distance people are prepared to travel to buy a good or service
Threshold population
the number of people needed to justify the provision of a good or service or make a profit
