Central Business District(CBD)
the main commercial and shopping area of a town or city
Residential
to do with housing
Industrial
to do with factories and manufacturing
Rural-urban fringe
the area on the very edge of a town or city where it meets the rural area or countryside
Tenement
a building that is split up into several apartments or flats
Industrial Revolution
the transition from being a rural agricultural society to one that is based on industry and machine manufacturing
Urbanisation
the process by which an increasing proportion of people live in towns and cities instead of the countryside
Rural depopulation
the fall in population of rural areas(by migration or a fall in birth rates as young people move away)
Counter-urbanisation
the process by which an increasing number of people within a country live in the countryside instead of in towns and cities
Infrastructure
the basic systems and services(eg. transport, buildings, etc.) that a country uses in order to work effectively
Squatter settlements
an area of makeshift housing that usually develops in unfavourable sites in and around an LEDC city(also known as ‘shanty’ towns)
Metropolitan
refers to a single urban settlement of outstanding size and importance which has absorbed other urban areas(often the capital city of a country)
Brownfield sites
land(usually in urban areas) that was previously used for industry or commercial purpose and that has the potential for redevelopment once any derelict buildings have been removed and any contamination has been cleared away
Urban sprawl
the expansion of towns and cities into the surrounding rural area or countryside
Urban regeneration
the renewal of a declining part of a town or city by removing existing houses and buildings as well as redeveloping the area
