Weakness Colloquium Flashcards
Why do MS patients get urinary symptoms?
Miscommunication between the detruser muscle and the bladder sphincter due to spinal cord lesions
What is the different between papilloedema and papillitis?
Both are disc swelling
- Papilloedema is due specifically to raised ICP (usually bilateral)
- Papilloedema is due to inflammation only (usually unilateral)
What are some the top two differentials in a young female with subacute sensory disturbance and LL weakness?
Spinal cord myelitis
GBS
What is transverse myelitis?
Inflammation demyelination that functionally transects the spinal cord
What pattern of sensory loss do you get in peripheral neuropathies?
Glove and stocking
Dermatomal
Mononeuropathy
What is Uhthoff’s phenomenon?
Demyelinating pathologies are worse with heat
What is a pyramidal pattern of weakness in the LL like?
Predominantly flexion weakness
Why does L’Hermitte’s sign occur?
Stretching of the dorsal column in the cervical spine causes sensory changes
