When are nasoduodenal/jejunal tubes indicated?
To overcome an obstruction
Specifically placed beyond anastomoses
What is a Hartmann’s procedure?
Removal of the sigmoid colon plus leaving a stoma
What is the difference between a loop ileostomy and end ileostomy?
Loop - you bring a loop of bowel out and open it
End - bring an open end of bowel out
What is a proctectomy?
Removal of the rectum without taking the anus
When do you complete a Hartmann’s procedure?
6 months
What is an end colostomy?
Bring up some colon
- Usually LIF
What is a Permacath?
Dual lumen, sits in internal jugular
For dialysis
Temporary while waiting for permenant therapy
What is a gastrostomy? When is it indicated?
A tube transversing the abdominal wall, directly into the stomach
Long term feeding - eg post neck surgery, gastroparesis
What are infusaports?
Tunnelled ports that sit entirely under the skin and sits in the subclavian
Smaller than Hickmans
What does faecalent fluid out of the NGT indicate?
The fluid has been around for a long time - SBO might not be resolving
What is a loop ileostomy?
Redirects faecalent material outside to prevent leakage from a new anastomoses
What is an ileal conduit?
Conduit from ureters to the outside via a section of ileum post bladder surgery
What is a extended R hemicolectomy?
Includes the area of the middle colic artery
What is a Hickman’s catheter?
2 lumened tube that sits in the RA after being tunnelled in the skin
Usually for chemo
Can last for many years
What are the indications for an NG tube?
Drainage
- SBO
- Ileus (if symptomatic)
- Post op anastomoses
