Mechanism of Echinacea
- E. purpurea increases WBCs, monocytes, neutrophils, and natural killer cells. Also shown to increase the production of interleukins and TNF alpha.
- E.purpurea shown to inhibit cyclooxygenases –>antiinflmmatory effect
Mechanism of garlic
- Inhibits ACE (decreased vasoconstriction)
- Decrease in proliferation and migration of VSMC decrease in wall/lumen ratio decreased vasoconstriction
- Increase in NO bioavailability reduction of oxidative stress enhanced vasodilation
- Increase in H2S production enhanced vasodilation
mechanism of Saw Palmetto
- Active agents may be sterols and fatty acids: inhibit 5 alpha reductase conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in vitro
st john’s worts mechanism
inhibits reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and NE
