Water, pH and Amino Acids Flashcards
What type of bonding does water have?
- Polar
- Hydrogen bonding (D-P-D)
What shape is a Water Molecule?
-Bent
What substances can dissolve in water?
- Polar and ionic-Hydrophilic
- ‘like dissolves in like’
What are Amphipathic Molecules?
BOTH-Polar (Hydrophilic) head and Non-Polar (Hydrophobic) tail
What are Precursors?
Compound in a reaction produces another compound.
What do amino acids form?
When joined together by peptide bonds form proteins
What are the two functional groups in an Amino Acids?
Carboxyl
Amine
What makes amino acids different?
R side chain attached
What are the X4 Types of Amino Acids and their R side chains?
1) Basic- Amine Group (NH2)
2) Acidic- Carboxyl group (COOH)
3) Polar-Hydroxyl Group (OH)
4) Hydrophobic-Hydrocarbon.
What type of reaction forms a protein from amino acids?
- condensation
- Water side product
What are Acids and Bases?
Acids- Donates protons ‘a’-away
Bases- Protein acceptor
What is the Acid Dissociation Constant? Ka
-Strength of Acid in a solution
What is pH a measure of?
-Measure of hydronium/hydrogen ions
What happens to the proton concentration when pH changes by 1?
Tenfold change in proton concentration
What is a Base?
A soluble alkali
What are buffer solutions?
Maintain pH when small amounts of acid and alkali are added
What is a Zwitterion?
- An amino acid with no charged R Side group
- Neutral can act as buffer
What happens to buffers when acids and alkalis are added?
- Acid added- Cationic form (H+ Ions)
- Alkali Added- Anionic Added (OH-)
